Institute of Applied Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is a member of the State Scientific and
Production Association "Scientific and Practical Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on materials."
The most important scientific direction of the institute is traditionally the development of physical basis, new methods
and means of non-destructive quality control of industrial products and technical diagnostics. This determined the name of the Department of Physics,
Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR non-destructive testing, established October 15, 1963 on the basis of the Laboratory for Physical Problems
of Physical-Technical Institute, of the Belorussian Academy renowned physicist academician magnetism Nikolai Akulov.
Expansion of scientific research topics of the Department, the growing needs of the economy of the republic formed the
basis for the adoption by the Government in January 1980, the decision on the transformation of the Department of Physics, non-destructive testing in
the Institute of Applied Physics.
Academician of the National Academy of Sciences N.S.Akulov headed the department until 1967, from 1967 to 1970 headed
the Department of Ph.D. V.A.Franyuk.
From 1970 to 1987, head of the Institute, Corresponding Member of N.N.Zatsepin in Belarus; from 1987 to 1993 - Member
of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus V.M.Artemiev; from 1993 to 2004 - member of the NAS of Belarus P.P.Prokhorenko; from 2005 to 2014 - D.Sc.
N.P.Migoun; from 2014 to present - Ph.D. R.G.Shulyakovsky.
Institute of Applied Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is the only one in the country, and overseas
academic institution specializing in the field of physics of non-destructive testing and technical diagnostics. Today it is a highly qualified team,
which employs about 100 employees, including 2 corresponding members, 12 doctors and 19 PhDs.

Renowned institutions brought the results of studies on the development of the scientific foundations of the theory of
magnetism, electromagnetic, ultrasonic, radio wave, a contact-dynamic, capillary and other NDT methods. Institute scientists created dozens of new
protected by copyrights and patents leading countries ways and means of control, embedded in many industrial enterprises of the republic and abroad.
At present, the most important result of the activities of the Institute is the successful implementation and coordination
(as an umbrella organization) fundamental and applied research in the framework of the subprogram "Technical diagnostics" state research program
"Mechanics, technical diagnostics, metallurgy", a number of state scientific and technical programs and Union State programs and research projects of
the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research.
Each year, scientists of the institute published about 100 articles and papers in conference proceedings, new developments
of the Institute are protected by patents, successfully implemented dozens of economic agreements and contracts with organizations and enterprises of the
Republic of Belarus, CIS and foreign countries to develop and implement tools and techniques for non-destructive testing and technical diagnostics."
Applied research institution characterized by a wide spectrum solve scientific and engineering problems that are
multidisciplinary in nature, and developed modern methods and means of nondestructive testing and technical diagnostics are used in energy, space
technology, metallurgy, automobile, tractor- and agricultural machinery, motor industry, construction , welding fabrication, electronics, petrochemicals,
rail and road transport, pipeline transport, bridge building, aircraft construction, repair services, utilities, medicine, sports, forensics and others.

The Institute maintains an active international relations, being one of the founders of the World Federation of Centres of
nondestructive testing (headquarters of the World Federation is in the US). Representatives of the Institute is traditionally headed by the Belarusian
Association of Non-Destructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics, members of the European Federation of NDT (EFNDT).
The Institute has two accredited by State Standard of the Republic of Belarus Laboratory: Testing Laboratory of
nondestructive testing and calibration laboratory.
The Institute is working on the preparation of highly qualified personnel through postgraduate and doctoral studies, works
only in the country doctoral council D 01.16.01 on thesis on specialties 05.11.13 "Devices and methods of monitoring of an environment, substances,
materials and products" and 05.02.11 "Quality monitoring and diagnostics in mechanical engineering.".
